Indonesia is a very diverse country and has a multicultural, multilingual (over 700 languages), and multi-ethnic society (over 1340 ethnic societies). Each ethnic group has their own arts, architecture and housing, cuisine, traditional dresses, festivals, music and dance, rituals, myths, philosophies, and language. In this occasion, ICAD showcases a part of Java, the most populous island in Indonesia, in “Java Blues“.

Indonesian Contemporary Art & Design wants to explore on how traditional craft and culture manages to engage with modernity and contemporary design.

“Java Blues” features over a dozen products from a variety of materials, such as ceramic, glass, textile, wood, and metal that have been carefully curated by Artura Team. A series of traditional Javanese culture can be found In “Java Blues”, made with woodcut technique or with the classic Javanese motif of batik textile. Also, Gunungan, an element from Wayang (Javanese shadow puppet) with figures of various animals an all forest dwellers, is featured and transformed into an interior element. Wiron, a chair inspired from traditional Javanese folding technic, characterizes the elegance and exoticism of a Javanese woman.
