FEATHERED FABRICS

Feathered fabrics are hand-woven fabrics made using ostrich feather yarn, making them soft, warm and light-weight. Ostriches currently are farmed for their meat and leather, which means they are slaughtered only after one year. Introducing an alternative industry where the ostriches are kept for their feathers, means the ostriches could live over 40 years, providing feathers naturally every 6 months. The production of these fabrics could bring back economic wealth to Oudsthoorn, who have farmed these ostriches since the 1900s.
