Design is One
On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile in Milan, intOndo, the Italian marketplace for art, design and vintage furniture, presents a double event dedicated to Massimo (Milan, 1931- New York, 2014) and Lella (Elena Valle, Udine 1934 - New York, 2016) Vignelli.
The exhibition "Design is One, Lella & Massimo Vignelli: homage to timeless design" on disply at intOndo showroom will be accompanied by a screening of the documentary Design is One, Lella & Massimo Vignelli and followed by a Q&A between Josh Owen, director of the Vignelli Center for Design studies at RIT (Rochester, NY), and Kathy Brew, co-director of the film, with Enrico Morteo as moderator.
"Design is one," which gives the film its title, refers precisely to Massimo’s approach according to which the designer takes on a specific responsibility: "Good design is visually powerful, intellectually elegant and, above all, timeless". A clear intention that is in perfect sync with intOndo which has in its DNA the desire to highlight the historical heritage in order to incentivize a circular economy model.
Presented by intOndo to pay homage to timeless design and its crucial role in today's society, the exhibition brings together a number of key pieces and projects that will lead the visitor into the multifaceted Vignelli universe. The selection of images and technical drawings that draw from the archives of the Vignelli Center for Design Studies, are joined by a number of everyday objects like the Mesa table by Poltrona Frau and item that is still in production, or one-of-a-kind pieces as the silver "Seicento" necklace by San Lorenzo, Milano.
These, together with other unique Vignelli pieces on display, show how much of the pair's work is part of our everyday lives, so much so that it is known even to those unfamiliar with them. From the re-design of the subway map to the street signs of New York City in the 1960s, to the restyling of the unmistakable logo of United Colors of Benetton or that of American Airlines, to the signage of Rome Termini train Station, each of us has come across one of the signs that Lella and Massimo have imprinted in their 50-year career between Italy and the United States.
