Sonosfera®

From 15 to 28 April, at the Catholic University, a sound installation made of profound sensorial and cognitive experiences: through technology David Monacchi reconnects us to a primordial world
Special Mention Fuorisalone Award
Technology

Sonosfera® is a technological amphitheatre for deep listening ecosystems and music designed by David Monacchi for Pesaro Città Creativa Unesco della Musica, a technological instrument included in the Pesaro Capitale Italiana della Cultura 2024 programme.

The geodesic structure acoustically isolated from the outside, with perfect internal acoustics and a sound-transparent cavea seating system, enable the entire spherical space around the listeners to be heard. The experience in Sonosfera® is accessible in groups of 40 people who will be immersed in a three-dimensional sound field created by 45 acoustic loudspeakers positioned in spherical geometry. A sensory theatre that reproduces the closest sound to reality ever realised. Sound spectrograms are projected in a 360° ultra-high definition corona, generating a powerful visual transposition of the acoustic sensory experience, overturning perceptual hierarchies.

Sonosfera® fits into this epochal ecological transition as an accelerator of consciousness, where high technology paradoxically allows reconnection with the primordial world through profound sensory and cognitive experiences. The sounds of the Earth's most biodiverse and ancient forest ecosystems are recorded in 3D and reproduced in spherical periphony. Partners in the installation are CTE Square - Home of Emerging Technologies and Renco, an international player present in 20 countries and a reference point for engineering and design. A reality firmly anchored to the territories in which it operates and which wants to convey, also thanks to this installation, a clear and topical message: only human relationships, innovation and investment in beauty can contribute to building a sustainable development model and leave a better world to future generations.

David Monacchi
(Urbino, 1970) He studied in Italy, Canada and the United States, and now teaches at the State Conservatory of Pesaro and various other institutions. An interdisciplinary artist, sound engineer, inventor and author, he conducts long-term research into the sound heritage of the planet's most remote and still untouched equatorial primary forests. With the Fragments of Extinction project, he has developed an approach of scientific dissemination through sound art, based on very high-definition 3D recordings he has made since 2002 in the Amazon, Congo Basin and Borneo, to create awareness of the global biodiversity crisis.
He is the holder of the international Eco-acoustic Theatre patent for the immersive enjoyment of natural sound ecosystems, from which several permanent and mobile deep listening spaces in Italy and Denmark were born. Since 1992 he has realised concerts and sound installations and held conferences in the fields of scientific research, technological and artistic innovation, all over the world. Among the most notable were his opening speech at the plenary session of the UN Conference on Biodiversity (COP-14), collaborations with IUCN and ICCROM, and those with visual artists such as Mimmo Paladino, Kristin Jones, and William Kentridge. Scientific journals such as Nature and PNAS have written about his work. He is a founding member of the International Society of Ecoacoustics and author of the film Dusk Chorus, awarded Best European Science Film 2018 and the most recent book for Mondadori L'Arca dei Suoni Originari.

Municipality of Pesaro
Italian Capital of Culture 2024

Pesaro, elected Italian Capital of Culture 2024, becomes the custodian of innovative knowledge, where the fusion of art, nature and technology draw a new future in the making. In this scenario, the House of Emerging Technologies and Renco collaborate on the Sonosfera® project, a fusion of flair and ingenuity that celebrates sustainability through the harmony of sounds, evoking a cultural symbiosis that reflects ecological awareness. Sonosfera® emerges as a concept
exemplary of this vision, an ode to the coexistence of creation and human artifice. A participation that wants to represent a territory, that of Pesaro, which
goes beyond the classic concept of a temporary installation and presents a work, so far hosted in Pesaro, that is the result of decades of research, investment and concrete actions. Pesaro thus reveals itself to be the theatre of a renewed awareness, a microcosm where culture is the beacon of a balanced tomorrow, a sublime combination of innovation and tradition that exalts responsibility towards our Earth.

Renco
As part of the Pesaro 2024 Nature of Culture, Renco is a partner in the Sonosfera® project. The group has undertaken a strategic transformation of its business model, centred on the principles of environmental, social and economic sustainability. Operating in 20 countries, Renco is a leading player in engineering, consulting and construction services in the energy and civil infrastructure sectors. Today, the group is a developer, financial sponsor, general contractor and organiser for large-scale and complex projects with high technological content. Renco invests in the social and economic fabric of the territories in which it operates, where it establishes lasting relationships with local communities, contributing to people's well-being. Some examples are the educational services offered in the schools built in Mozambique and the health care provided in hospital clinics in Tanzania and Congo. To date, the company is on track to achieve 70% of its turnover from environmental conversion initiatives. Emblematic is the Ja.Ca.Mbè project (Congo) of reforestation in 40k hectares of savannah that will absorb up to thirty million tonnes of carbon dioxide. Renco will contribute to the redevelopment of the former Expo area in Milan by designing and building the MIND Hub, applying the highest international standards of occupational safety and environmental sustainability.
