Focus Event

ACTUATED KNIT//TEXTILEMORPHOSIS

Actuated Knit//Textilemorphosis showcases a selection of research and experimentation projects carried on by the Department of Architecture and Building Construction of Politecnico di Milano, presenting innovative textile solutions that aim to redefine the the way textiles are implemented in buildings.  Inspired by the adaptive skins of animals and plants, the exhibition introduces to several solutions that make innovative uses of fibrous materials that can transform in response to environmental changes, offering a visionary approach to building facades and protective systems suitable for both interior and exterior applications.

Knitted fabric installations that feature integrated sensors and electronically driven actuators, allowing them to interact with visitors and respond to variations in temperature and humidity. This dynamic interplay creates a multitude of configurations, demonstrating the potential of textiles to enhance the functionality and aesthetics of our built environment. Actuated Knit//Textilemorphosis aims to put in the spotlight the importance of sustainability and functionality in design, with prototypes of insulated and breathable façade skins showcasing active experimentation in various application scenarios such as homes, offices, historic buildings, and outdoor installations.

Promoting collaboration between fashion and architecture, the exhibition features prototypes resulting from an eco-design process using post-consumer textile waste, underscoring the commitment to sustainable practices and the circular economy.

The exhibition is a testament to the rigorous research conducted by Politecnico di Milano and the high turnover of research project to the world of architecture and textile industry. From the initial research phase to the integration of adaptive technologies into textile panels, the journey of experimentation is celebrated. As part of the Fuorisalone 2025, the exhibition promotes a discussion on the future of building circularity, aesthetics, functionality, and transformability, particularly in the face of climate change.

Actuated Knit//Textilemorphosis aims to invite to rethink buildings in a lighter and more performative way, as a third light but highly protective skin, after our own skin and the clothes we wear. The exhibition encourages a holistic design approach that enhances the well-being and health of environments through technology, circularity and architecture, paving the way for the building technologies of tomorrow.
