Long championing the significance of craft through his abstract and multidisciplinary approach to creation, Samuel brings a bold visual interpretation that captures half a century of interwoven stories from The Balvenie Fifty Collection as a unique and sensory hospitality experience. The work bridges the legacy of rare craft practices passed down through generations with a contemporary lens, creating an experience that redefines the boundaries of hospitality and design.
“TRANSPOSITION is a collision between two worlds. Between the elements and the man made. Between craft and industry.
“The works, and sculptural environment of TRANSPOSITION, will change your relationship with what you are tasting on site.”
This site-specific work, TRANSPOSITION features elevated copper sculptures that capture the spirit of distillation, as an artistic statement. Throughout the building vertical rivers create unfiltered sensory experiences based on whisky’s alchemic, yet rigorous means of production. Mist, shadow, light and sound will combine.
A sculptural copper bar exclusively serves The Balvenie expressions, with personalised serves individualised through thought provoking glassware selection. Sipping The Balvenie whilst immersed within the environ of TRANSPOSITION, exploring its different vantage points and sensory provocations, guests are transported to a personal and fully immersive experience that is propelled by Samuel Ross’ vision
of landscape, tone, light evolution and sound. The reimagination of hospitality heroes’ individualism and no two guests’ journeys will be the same.
The Balvenie Fifty Collection is a celebration of stories across people, craft and foresight, over five decades. Interwoven into three unique expressions, The Balvenie Fifty Collection will see only a limited number of bottles released annually over the next three years. The First Edition, released in August 2024 is a unique single cask expression, aged in a European Oak Refill Butt, filled in 1973 and selected by Malt Master, Kelsey McKechnie. For the Second Edition Kelsey introduces a second American Oak Hogshead cask filled in 1973 to marry with the first, before adding a third American Oak Barrel filled in 1974 cask to the marriage for the final Edition Three.
Operating through multiple creative fields and known for his playful manipulation of industrial materials, Samuel Ross’ work blends disciplines and characterises a freedom of vision and cultural fusion that aims to inspire across the generations. At the intersection of artistry and industry, Samuel Ross has earned widespread recognition, winning multiple awards and his work is included in the current collections of The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Victoria & Albert Museum.
