Creator and co-founder of 5+1 agency in 1995 and 5+1AA (2005), transformed into Atelier(s) Alfonso Femia in 2017.
He has been a Professor of Architectural Design Didactics at Kent State University in Florence, at the Universities of Ferrara and Genoa.
He is the founder of 500x100, a video platform on communication about the theme of the city.
In 2018, he edited the monographic issue of “IQD Magazine “Mediterranei Invisibili” starting the path of research and reaffirmation of the centrality of the Mediterranean Sea in contemporary thought.
In 2019 he is Guest Editor of IQD, editing of the "Mediterranean" theme and the number "Invisible Brazil" with Antoine Vernholes and Tomas Alvin.
His research on the matter theme, led him to collaborate with important design companies including: Castaldi Lighting, iGuzzini, Martinelli Luce, Erco, 3F Filippi, Albed, DND Handles, Merotto Milani, Londonart, PoltronaFrau, Casalgrande Padana, Xilo1930, Staygreen Stylcomp.
In 2019, he has been nominated Artistic Director of the Biennale of Architecture of Pisa. The same year, he has been listed in the AIdi/Compasso d’Oro index with the project for the door handle ”(IN)finito for DND Handle” and has been awarded by the German Design Awards 2020 for the “Drop by Drop” ceiling light produced by Guzzini.
A lover of the city-territories, he defines “time” as the main subject of design and architecture.
