The construction of the wooden supporting structure for Italy’s Pavilion, designed by Mario Cucinella, has been completed six months ahead of the Expo opening in Osaka, Japan.
Whit just six months until the official opening of the Universal Exhibition, which from 13 April 2025 will gather 160 countries come together around the theme Designing the Future Society for Our Lives, Mario Cucinella and Commissioner General Mario Vattani confirmed that the Pavilion's structures have been completed on schedule. The pavilion, designed by MCA – Mario Cucinella Architects in collaboration with project management firm Beyond Limits and construction companies Nomura Co. and Nishio Rent All Co., is fully made of wood sourced from certified local supply chains.
Italy is thus among the first countries to have completed the basic structural work on its Pavilion.
Italy now ranks among the first countries to complete the basic structural work on its pavilion. “Today marks an important step in the realization of the Italian Pavilion,” stated Mario Cucinella. “We are proud to announce the completion of the supporting structures of what will be the largest wooden construction at Expo 2025 Osaka, reinforcing our pavilion as a symbol of sustainability and innovation.”
Commissioner General Vattani emphasized the significance of the pavilion for showcasing a contemporary image of Italy, its technology, and innovation. “Our pavilion features the most impressive wooden structure among participating countries, visible from various points of the site. Visitors will experience the largest green roof at the Expo, offering breathtaking views.”
Strategically positioned near the Grand Ring—designed by architect Fujimoto Sou and also constructed entirely from wood—the Italian Pavilion will engage with the Ring both structurally and symbolically. The pavilion’s calculated height creates a natural stage for high-visibility events, celebrating Italian creativity and the excellence of Made in Italy, observable from the Ring and elevated spectator stands.
The Italian Pavilion is envisioned as a grand showcase of Italian craftsmanship, drawing inspiration from the Ideal City of the Renaissance. Under the theme Art Regenerates Life, it will host artistic, scientific, entrepreneurial, and social experiments. Visitors will embark on a creative journey in three acts, rooted in Italy’s innovative legacy. At its core is a large space designed to accommodate performances and exhibitions.
A traditional Italian garden, filled with plants and art, will grace the pavilion’s roof.
