Curator Guendalina Salimei launches an open call to designers, scholars, and cultural operators to reflect on Italy's coastal and port areas
From May 10 to November 23, 2025, the 19th International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale will take place, for which the Padiglione Italia has presented the project Terræ Aquæ. L’Italia e l’intelligenza del mare.
The goal is to reflect on innovative solutions for coastal and port areas, charting new routes for the future through the collection of experimental proposals generated by a collective intelligence engaged in solving the problems related to the environmental conditions of the sea and Italy's marine and coastal heritage.
The curator of the Padiglione Italia, Roman architect Guendalina Salimei, has launched a call—open until March 3, 2025—addressed to designers, scholars, and cultural operators with the intent to explore and rethink in an innovative way the relationship between land and sea. It is an invitation to imagine the “form of the sea,” envisioning futuristic or utopian visions, projects, and desires for all those frontier places between land and sea where the rules of habitation are subject to constant reconfiguration in relation to the laws of nature and humanity.

The aim is to stimulate reflection on architectural, urban, environmental, humanistic, and geopolitical themes, developing new ideas that can trigger actions in various contexts, materializing into experimentation labs and advanced research.
The call is open to both individuals and groups, including both established and emerging entities. Participants may submit their contributions in digital format, choosing from different types of submissions: a written text, a graphic piece, or a video (documentaries, animated illustrations, photo sequences, or interviews).

The goal is to select works that are best suited to be included in the exhibition, considering key criteria such as the ability to project toward the future, empathy with the places, social impact, ecological footprint, and degree of innovation. These elements will guide the selection process, contributing to building a meaningful and articulated narrative about the relationship between land and sea.
