Making the Invisible Visible: Google at Fuorisalone 2025

— 03 April 2025

For Design Week 2025, Google returns to Milan with Making the Invisible Visible, an installation that explores how abstract ideas take physical form

Set within Garage 21, the exhibition co-created by Google's Chief Design Officer of Consumer Devices, Ivy Ross, and her design team in collaboration with artist Lachlan Turczan, known for his work with light, water, and perception. This year’s presentation continues Google’s series of design explorations at Milan Design Week, following A Space for Being (2019), Shaped by Water (2023), and Making Sense of Color (2024). Making the Invisible Visible is perhaps the most poetic yet, inviting visitors to experience the hidden processes behind both artistic and technological creation.

The journey begins in Lucida (I–IV), Turczan’s latest artwork, composed entirely of sculpted light. Using large-scale optics and mist, the installation forms volumetric spaces where light appears to transform into something that can be touched, inhabited, and felt. As visitors move through, their presence activates the work. By giving light qualities of physical matter, Lucida hints at a future where form no longer relies on physical mass, but instead on energy and perception.

This immersive opening sets the tone for the rest of the exhibition, which moves from abstract expression to product design. In the next two spaces, Google reveals the design thinking behind key hardware products.
Visitors will enjoy experiencing how ideas evolve into physical objects through a combination of emotion, intention, and craft.
The final room presents Google’s full hardware portfolio, presented as a reflection of its design inspiration, philosophy, and craftsmanship. Making the Invisible Visible furthers the conversation on thoughtful design by sharing how Google transforms ideas into beautiful hardware products that provide moments of magic. This approach is central to Ross and her design team, whose influence shapes the entire exhibition.

Ross, who joined Google in 2014, is the Chief Design Officer of Consumer Devices at Google, which was officially formed in 2016 and has helped define a design language that is tactile, human, and emotionally resonant. Since 2017, she and her team have launched a family of consumer hardware products earning over 250 design awards. Ross has a background that includes leadership roles at Coach, Swatch, and Mattel, she brings a unique blend of artistic sensitivity and strategic vision. Her belief in the intersection of art and science resonates throughout the installation.

Turczan’s contribution adds further depth. Known for his large-scale, light-and-water installations that explore perception and natural forces, his work brings a meditative quality to the experience. The result is a rare alignment between technology and art—where the two do not compete, but enhance one another.
Making the Invisible Visible offers an enchanting and serene experience that stands out amidst the lively atmosphere of Milan Design Week. It reminds us that design is not only about utility, but about how things feel, how they affect us, and how they shape the spaces we inhabit, often in ways we don’t immediately see.
